To follow your comment (which I agree with, btw), I think it might also be that we’re not actually that used to seeing our favourite cartoon pones face-on; they’re usually depicted with head turned slightly aside - not necessarily a full profile, but at least like a 3/4ths view or something. Face square-on is a lot less common and can look a little…off sometimes, just because of that.
